Latest Updates from Our Project:

About More Words
almost 7 years ago – Mon, Jun 10, 2019 at 01:03:43 AM

Hello! It looks like we'll hit the next stretch goal soon, so I wanted to take some time over the weekend to explain the one after that:

$30,000 (approx. US$20,780) — More Words

At this level, we'll expand the Grand Cross setting with new sections for locations, NPCs, politics and culture, and other narrative tools. We'll hire more freelancers to help with this, starting at 15¢ (USD) a word.

So, what does this mean? Well:

Perspectives

One of Hard Wired Island's pillars of cyberpunk is many perspectives: it should examine how social and technological issues affect many communities, especially marginalized ones. Obviously, the best way to have many perspectives in the book is to have them on the team.

With that in mind:

First, we're recruiting consultants to help make sure we get things right. If you liked the example scenario, that had one for the parts about gentrification. As writing progresses, we'll tap more for other issues (including sensitivity reading). Consultants will be paid for their time, because why wouldn't they be?

Second, we're recruiting writers to add more voices directly. This is not just to get them to write about their own background—that feels like the writing version of organizing a gaming con and relegating the non-white-guy speakers to diversity panels. There are a few specific topics we're seeking out writers for, but for the most part we just want a diverse group of people writing fun cyberpunk stuff.

We already set aside some budget for freelancers in our funding target, but the stretch goal will help us recruit more.

(If you're interested in writing, I'll post a writing call post-KS when I know our final budget and I've got more of the setting locked down.)

Freelance Rates

On the topic of writers: all writers will be paid 15¢ USD per word. (On completion, not publication.) There are a few reasons for this:

  • Freelance writing rates in the RPG sphere are usually too low. The standard is something like 3-5¢/word, which isn't even poverty wages. That sucks and we can do better.
  • Doing better might encourage or inspire other people to do better, which is good for everyone.
  • As a writers, it's also good for me specifically.

(And honestly, 15¢/word is still pretty low. That's why we have a stretch goal to increase the pay of everyone on the project, writers included!)

So, What's Next

The KS closes this week! Honestly, I'm already amazed at the amount of support we've received so far. Just hearing about people playing the preview scenario warms the cockles of my heart. Hearing people get hyped by the preview hearts my heart cockles to dangerous levels. The last 48 hours is probably going to light me on fire and it will be great.

I'll try to make one last push for funding this week. If you can help spread the word, please do! And if you haven't had a butcher's at the Discord (that's Australian for "click the link"), give it a look! We've got a nice little community going, and as we work on Hard Wired Island we'll be posting some extra previews and polls there.

We may be continuing last week's stream today, so I'll post in 8-9 hours or so if we can get the gang together. Either way, I'll have more cool links to show you later. See you soon!

IRC Interview + have a sketch
almost 7 years ago – Thu, Jun 06, 2019 at 09:39:09 PM

Hey! Here's some stuff.

First... a while ago, I mentioned doing an IRC interview about the game. Well, that's done! You can check out the transcript HERE.

Second: since we've funded, we're getting a head start on more art commissions. The preview doc mentions that Maru (the sample hacker PC on the campaign page) has a roommate, the cyborg former musician Soyeong. Well:

Art by Lo Bennett.
Art by Lo Bennett.

(The full sketch and others will be in the behind-the-scenes PDF, if you're interested.)

Third: Since we streamed Hard Wired Island game this week but didn't finish, we'll probably try to wrap it up same time next week. I'll post an update when we start. Hope to see you there!

Finally, we updated the preview document again. Nothing major, just thought I'd let you know. (I also added the links to the FAQ.)

Other than that, things are going great! At this rate we'll definitely hit the print stretch goal, the Discord turned out to be popular, and the final week of the campaign looks like it'll have a strong finish. Once again, thank you for anything and everything you all did to make this happen - we couldn't have gotten this far without people spreading the word, and I'm glad you like what we're doing.

I want to show you some more cool stuff, so I'll see you soon!

Insert Quest Here Interview Part 2, Stream
almost 7 years ago – Mon, Jun 03, 2019 at 12:31:42 AM

Hey there! Good news: our second interview we did with [insert quest here] is up now. In this one, Freyja talks about the mechanics. Click here to check it out!

Also, we're currently (badly) streaming an audio playtest of Hard Wired Island via Twitch. You can check that out here!

We Have A Discord Now
almost 7 years ago – Sat, Jun 01, 2019 at 11:25:46 PM

Hey there! Some folks asked about setting up a Hard Wired Island Discord, so I've set up a server...

which you can find here!

This Discord is for general discussion of my games, past and future, but the current focus is on HWI. Come say hi, ask questions, talk about anime with other backers! You can even use an emoji that looks like Hatsune Miku dabbing. We've got everything.

Example Scenario: The Terabyte Boys
almost 7 years ago – Thu, May 30, 2019 at 01:03:58 AM

Hey there! We're at 109% funded right now, and well on track to get that print run stretch goal. In the meantime, we've whipped up a quick mission to better show the kind of things we want people to do in Hard Wired Island.

The Terabyte Boys is an open-ended scenario set in a gentrifying LGBT+ neighbourhood. The PCs have to deal with cybercrime, indifferent cops, and rainbow capitalism before they cause a disaster that could end the place for good. So typical cyberpunk, basically.

It's attached to the end of the preview, which you can find on itch.io and DriveThruRPG. If you downloaded it before, grab yourself a new copy!

We hope you like it. Like the rest of the preview, it's subject to change in the final version,. If you've got any questions or feedback, please let me know.

That's it for now, so I'll see you soon!
